Better Bones Service

The Better Bones service offers a free 10-12 week local exercise and/or educational programme on how to improve your joint and bone health.

Who is this for?

Age Group

  • Over 18

What is this service?

Face to face and online sessions, include:

Bone health information sessions - bone health and looking after your joints, osteoarthritis management, lifestyle factors including diet and physical activity

Strength & balance exercise class - if you have one or more long term condition, and need general exercises to improve or maintain your muscle strength and balance.

Osteoarthritis knee exercise class - exercise and information for people diagnosed with osteoarthritis of one or both knees, that haven’t been replaced.

Osteoporosis risk exercise class - weight bearing, bone and muscle strength and balance exercises if you have a diagnosis of osteopenia or osteoporosis, or are at risk of developing these.

Risk factors include

  • low trauma fracture

  • family history of hip fracture

  • early menopause (before 45)

  • rheumatoid arthritis

  • cancer treatments

  • taking oral steroids

  • age - women over 50

  • low parathyroid or high thyroid levels

  • eating disorders or avoiding major food groups (e.g. coeliacs)

  • smoking

  • drinking more than 3 units of alcohol per day.

Information sessions

  1. Bone Health: 3 Mar (13.00-14.30pm), Tolworth Library, 37-39 The Broadway, Surbiton KT6 7DJ and 17 June (10.30am-12.00pm) Hook centre, 13 Hook Road, Hook, Chessington KT9 1EJ

Learn about how to look after your bones. We will discuss diet, exercise and lifestyle factors that affects our bones and how to keep them healthy and strong.

  1. Physical Activity: 15 Apr (10.30am-12.00pm), Hook centre, 13 Hook Road, Hook, Chessington KT9 1EJ

    Learn about Physical activity and the type and amount of activities we need to do to maintain our health and wellbeing. Also learn about simple exercises to do at home.

  2. Osteoporosis and Bone Health: 19 May (12.30-14.30pm), Tudor drive library hall, Tudor drive, KT2 5QH

    Learn about how to manage or prevent osteoporosis. We will discuss diet, exercise and lifestyle factors that affects our bones and how to keep them healthy and strong.

  3. Self management in Osteoarthritis: 20 May (10.30am-12.00pm) Hook centre, 13 Hook Road, Hook, Chessington KT9 1EJ

    Learn about osteoarthritis and how to look after your joints using lifestyle factors.

  1. Osteoporosis Risk Class (12 weeks), Starting 14 April, Tuesdays 12.30-13.30pm at Tudor drive library hall, Tudor drive, KT2 5QH. 

  2. Osteoarthritis Knee Class (12 weeks), Starting 14 April, Tuesdays 10.30-11.30am at Tudor drive library hall, Tudor drive, KT2 5QH.   

  3. Strength & Balance Class (10 weeks), Starting 16 Apr,Thursdays 10.30-11.30am at Hook centre, 13 Hook Road, Hook, Chessington KT9 1EJ
