· Philosophy aims to set you free. Free from pressures and worries, free from limiting ways of thinking, free to grow and be yourself.
· It is experiential; practical rather than academic and draws on authentic sources of wisdom from East and West, past and present.
· Topics relevant to life today will be explored through questions and answers, truth being the aim.
· An open mind is all that is needed and neither to accept nor reject what is proposed but to test it out in practice and share observations.
· No prior knowledge is required.
Some benefits: Understanding yourself better helps you understand others which makes life more harmonious. Begin to see circumstances and relationships afresh and find meaning where there previously was little or none.
The course is not linked with any religion but it does address the essential ‘being’ of human beings and is relevant and accessible to everyone of whatever faith or no faith.
The course is intended for everyone, regardless of age, race, gender, language, education, occupation or beliefs. Enjoy the good company of like-minded individuals.
Questions are the life-blood of philosophy and are welcome.
The general direction of the course:
You will begin an illuminating enquiry into Self-knowledge: including that within yourself which always ‘is’ as well as that which is always changing.
Observe levels of awareness and what it means to be awake. Practise a simple mindful awareness exercise, suitable for everyone.
Expand your horizons by tapping into your true potential; identify and learn to let go of things that hold you back.
Live justly as Plato suggests by not allowing six tyrants to tyrannise us within.
Observe qualities of energy which, when working harmoniously, bring illumination and can help us free up, regulate and conserve vital energy.
Develop reason, that faculty through which we draw conclusions as to truth, motive, cause and justice. Improve decision-making.
Enjoy inner peace and happiness: Lao Tzu’s effortless action; contentment; lasting and temporary happiness; Plato’s necessary & unnecessary pleasures.
Realise the common thread in life which unites everyone and everything - the non-dual unity behind the apparent differences.
The power of love: Observe how love can be pure unconditional, natural and constant or how it can become impure, conditional, attached, clinging or deluded.
Explore the nature of the mind: and its powers and capabilities when fully in the present.
Freedom: The wise tell us that the self is free and not bound or limited; get a taste of this freedom in practice.
Our tutors are also senior students in the school and offer their services freely and voluntarily.
Authentic mantra-based meditation is a beautiful, energising practice which brings a complimentary balance to the study of philosophy and is available on request.
