The Housing Loss Prevention Advice Service (HLPAS) is a free legal advice service for people who are at risk of losing their home.
Page last updated

Clients facing the loss of their home are entitled to help from the moment they are informed that possession of their home is being sought by their landlord or mortgage lender. Advice can continue until there is a substantive possession hearing (i.e. the court makes an outright possession order, dismisses the possession claim or makes directions for the future conduct of the proceedings). It does not cover representation at court.
HLPAS is a non-means tested service, which means no financial assessment is required.
To be eligible for advice under HLPAS, a client is required to show written evidence that there is a risk of possession proceedings, loss of their home or an illegal eviction. This includes:
A letter or notice to quit from a landlord, where they have an informal licence or a lack of security of tenure.
A letter before action, or notice seeking possession (e.g. a Section 21 or Section 8 notice).
A letter from the court notifying the client that possession proceedings have been issued.
A record of events that shows there may be an illegal eviction.
