More about the community garden

Since summer 2016, volunteers have been transforming the neglected former gardeners’ yard on the edge of Canbury Gardens into a productive, wild-life-friendly, community garden.

If you’d like to learn more about wild-life-friendly gardening, or you're a keen gardener with skills you could share, or you’d enjoy working alongside other people to grow herbs and other edibles, come along to one of our events or weekend gardening sessions - there's always plenty to do, depending on the season, your abilities and the time you can spare: watering, weeding, planting, harvesting, tidying, composting… Children accompanied by a responsible adult are welcome too.

The basic principle is that those that do the work share in the harvest - and we have had some excellent harvests of runner and broad beans, tomatoes, herbs, courgettes, spinach…

Canbury Community Chicken Collective keep a few chickens in a run in the garden; they are out and about during gardening sessions and fun to watch.

There's plenty of evidence that outdoor activity can help fight depression and provide a few hours of respite from everyday worries (for example see https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/may/13/green-therapy-gardening-helping-fight-depression) - though that's not the only reason to come along!
