What is this service?

Richmond AID is a charity supporting Deaf and Disabled people in Teddington, aiming to empower individuals across the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and surrounding areas. We offer advice, information, and campaign on issues affecting Disabled people to promote independence.

About the BuddyUp Project

BuddyUp helps Disabled youth build independence and confidence through local activities. Each young person is paired with a volunteer “buddy” who supports and encourages them in accessing activities and using public transport, fostering friendships and confidence. Richmond AID runs BuddyUp with funding from Achieving for Children’s Short Breaks Fund.

Volunteer Screening and Training

All volunteers are DBS-checked with references, and receive training on health and safety, safeguarding, and disability awareness. Volunteers complete supervised shadow sessions and maintain ongoing contact with coordinators to ensure reliability and enthusiasm.

Cost

BuddyUp is free. Parents/guardians only cover activity or transport costs for their young person, while BuddyUp covers volunteer costs.

Meeting Frequency

Meetings are flexible based on the young person’s needs, typically occurring twice a month. Volunteers stay in regular contact, and any breaks, such as for exams, are communicated through coordinators.

Community Confidence

The program is designed to gradually build confidence in community access and public transport use. If a young person prefers having a parent along, this is accommodated. BuddyUp can also work with youth on achieving specific travel goals.

Wait Times for a Buddy

Young people can attend group outings while waiting for a buddy, with an average pairing time of 6–12 months. This may extend if specific buddy preferences are requested.
