This event involves a one-hour interactive guided walk through the neighbourhood of Hook in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, followed by a one-hour creative workshop in the Hook Centre. During the walk we will explore Hook’s fascinating heritage and consider the significance of its position at the very edge of the city. We will read together diverse stories – about places near and far, and by famous and forgotten writers – in relation to familiar locations and landscapes. During the workshop, we will create new stories of Hook through a guided map-making activity.
We will begin and end our walk at the Hook Centre. Please meet in the foyer at 12.50.
There will be refreshments provided during the creative workshop in the Hook Centre.
This event is fully accessible and is designed for people of all ages who have an interest in reading and urban heritage.
This event is part of the University of Surrey Being Human Festival Hub Programme. Being Human is the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 6 - 15 November 2025. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
