Kingston Carnival Summer Drumming Program

From July 6th to September 7th

Sundays 3-5pm at the Kingston Market Place (KT1 1JS)

Registration Fee: £60/Adult or £100/Family (including children, parents and/or grandparents)

Registration includes:

       – 8 Drumming Workshops on Sundays July 6th, 13th & 20th; August 3rd, 10th, 17th & 31st; and Saturday September 6th (Dress Rehearsal)

       – 2 Fun Social Event to decorate drums and make costumes (time and location TBC)

       – T-shirt and costume for Carnival Parade

       – Participation in Kingston 2025 River Festival on September 6th (Dress Rehearsal)

       – Participation in Kingston 2025 Carnival Parade on September 7th

Open to adults and children. All are welcome!

What to Expect:

The mission of Community Drumming is to build a diverse, intergenerational, neuroinclusive, and collaborative drumming community in Kingston, that brings joy to the community and celebrates Kingston diversity. Through group drumming we aim to foster meaningful human connections, empower individuals, encourage creativity, and combat social isolation, thereby building more cohesive, supportive, and resilient communities.

This project is funded by a Kingston 2025 Community Grant from The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Our goal is to form a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive Afro-Brazilian drumming band to perform in the Kingston Carnival Parade on September 7th. To achieve this goal, we’re inviting Kingston residents of all ages to join  our summer drumming program, where participants will learn Afro-Brazilian rhythms and rehearse for the big day. Participants will drum alongside members from our existing drumming program, which include our Afro-Brazilian drumming band, families that participate in our Family Drum Fun workshops, as well as vulnerable people from the different charities we work with. These include people with learning disabilities/difficulties from Kingston Mencap and Kingston Eco-op, people overcoming mental health challenges from Shine Bright UK, and elderly people from Milaap.

Workshop will offer a save, welcoming space to connect, rehearse, and build something special together. In addition to the weekly drumming workshops, we’ll host two social events to decorate drums and make costumes, thus celebrating collaboration and self-expression across our diverse community. The project will culminate in a performance at the Kingston 2025 River Festival on September 6th (our final dress rehearsal), followed by the Kingston 2025 Carnival Parade on September 7th. On that day, we will also host a drum circle lead by people with learning disabilities that will be open to all participants and members of the general public.
